Case for Christianity April 12, 2009

Today is Easter Sunday and I am typing this out and post it for the whole world to read. **May edit later for clarity and typos, keep your thoughts coming**

The title of this post is so hackneyed and at least one Christian apologist (who was ‘saved’ after his Atheism got a kick in the ass by Biblical truth) Lee Strobel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lee_Strobel) has written a book with this title. I believe that an intellectually honest faith is a true and healthy faith. Generally there are two equally unpalatable camps regarding Christianity, one is of course of fundamentalist Christians who believe in the inerrancy of Bible and want schools to teach biblical Creationism and so on.

The other camp is full of bitter, mocking and fundamentalist atheists like Richard Dawkins. Unfortunately many literary figures have also tried their hand from time to time at Bible bashing for example Gore Vidal, Norman Mailer etc. It is easy to do so today than when writers like D.H. Lawrence did so and got banned everywhere. And in the case of what many consider father of the great American novel and great humorist Mark Twain, he considered it wise to keep his heretic and dissenting writings about Christianity in the closet. It was only recently that it was discovered how passionately Mark Twain rejected traditional Christian faith. (See this link for introduction of Twain’s views against organized religion:http://www.twainquotes.com/Religion.html )

Then there are lapsed Christians like former nun and now ‘secular’ writer Karen Armstrong(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karen_Armstrong). Naturally she feels her years were robbed by Christianity and now by writing books that reveal the fallacies and contradictions in the Bible she is settling the scores in a way. And why shouldn’t she. She has every right to express her opinions and she is a very competent and engrossing researcher, scholar and writer. But then she also writes books on Islam, Koran and Mohammed and she gets into appeasement gear and takes sides and glosses over Muslim fundamentalism. This is hardly what can be remotely called intellectual honesty. This is deception, this is pandering. You punch holes in Christianity because Western world gives you the freedom to do so but you go soft on Islam because you fear backlash. That makes you- and others of your ilk- intellectually dishonest cowards.

Tolstoy’s Confession (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Confession) is a great resource about someone going through the crisis of faith and trying to find intellectually honest answers that agree with one’s conscience . It’s full text can be found for free on the internet from many sources including this one: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/A_Confession. Another great Russian writer Dostoevsky dealt with issues of faith in his novels. I have not read Brothers Karamazov but love this quote ‘If there is no God, everything is permissible.’ It always rings true for me. I also love Kant’s quote ‘Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing wonder and awe, the more often and the more seriously reflection concentrates upon them: the starry heaven above me and the moral law within me.’ Bible agrees with this kind of thought in a few places like in Luke 17:21 ‘‘Nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold the kingdom of God is within you.’’ (English Standard Version of Bible).

To cut the long story short in order to have an intellectually honest faith I find myself reading Bart D. Ehrman’s book ‘Misquoting Jesus: The story behind who changed the Bible and Why’. He is a Bible scholar who has extensively studied (and taught) Bible (especially New Testament) in original languages for years. This book’s content is not original but has been presented in a very easy to grasp format for a layman who wants to do some honest investigation into the Biblical text and history of the very early Christian church. One review of the book fired a passionate debate on Amazon.com and you can access it from this link: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3L9D4Y81NNVGY/ref=cm_cr_dp_cmt?ie=UTF8&ASIN=0060859512&nodeID=283155#wasThisHelpful

This only proves how Christian faith means different things to different people. I personally believe in being intellectually honest but at the same time agreeing with Immanuel Kant and Luke 21:17, the Ten Commandments, teachings of Christ to love all mankind and to love God. I also believe that the theology presented in the Book of Romans is a good introduction to Christian faith. I believe objective scholarly resources should be used only to have a healthy faith, for a progressive and open minded Christian.

On Internet Social Networking September 7, 2008

Brave New World of Digital Intimacy

The New York Times had this extensive article on Social Networking websites. I wrote the following comment as my rumination on the subject. Surprisingly, moderators rejected it( to the best of my knowledge). Wonder why? Was it misogynistic? Anti Religion? Too religious? Would you know why? Anyhow, I am glad I can still post it and let the world read.

This article almost gave me headaches. It reminds me of Internet’s trillions of tentacles. Get to this Wikipedia link for a list of popular social networking sites for example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_social_networking_websites

You get Facebook, then Twitter and then something else. Then another new site pops up providing the best of three and then yet again something else. It’s a NEVER ending quest. I think the book of Ecclesiastes in Bible was written when some prophet foresaw the internet and digital age of today: ”All things are wearisome; more than one can express…there is nothing new under the sun.”

Once a friend asks you to come look at his or her page, soon you realize you MUST register to view the page and you end up getting signed up for all the Facebooks and Twitters spread all over the face of this once green and blue but now all digital earth. Even newspapers (like Washington Post) and book sellers (like Amazon) offer social networking to their registered users.

Sometimes, a pioneering Social Networker (for some reason, They are ALWAYS women) invites the flock to some new social networking site (It might be Shelfari or Multiply or HeavenknowsWhat) and then gets sick of it and abandons it anyway, only to proclaim that the next one she’s found is the perfect one.

It’s like some lady Moses of the digital age messing about her flock through the eternal silicon valley of utter wastefulness and constant flux. But in this story there is neither Jehovah nor Jesus to save us.

And these things can of course become very obsessive. You must know what new ”moods” or ”twitters” or other updates there are. Even news websites and news aggregators act like twitters and heart beats of the world that get updated every minute.

Recently, Atlantic Monthly came with an article ”Is Google making us stupid” (http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200807/google) You bet it is. Reluctantly, I did an experiment to find out the truth. I actually switched off my computer (if I keep it on I must check all twitters and emails every 30 minutes)… so I switched it off (I was able to do it as I’d also gotten sick of the latest Spywares, Adwares etc. that afflicted my PC, by the way, my latest blog offers some good tips to fellow sufferers and surfers).

After having my digital contraption off… I was learning so much more in my spare time by simply being able to read books and sticking with the reading, newspaper articles, even just watching TV, listening to radio. And I relaxed a lot, enjoyed my coffee better… was able to productively and creatively think about many other things. Also, I was at peace.

You can do that too! Or else, Abandon hope all Ye who enter here….

God’s grace. January 22, 2008

I was just searching for some Bible verse that mentions God’s sovereign will in the redemption of humankind. Because without God’s grace we are incapable of saving ourselves no matter how much good works or Karma or righteousness we can claim to possess. It is not our ability to be good but God’s ability to be merciful that matters. Right now, I also pray to God to reach the ones who put their faith in Him and save them from stumbling doubts, the calamities of life and afterlife. Amen.

Here are some verses from Jeremiah that caught my attention:

Jeremiah Chapter 32:38-41

They shall be my people and I shall be their God. I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me for all time, for their own good and the good of their children after them. I will make an everlasting covenant with them, never to draw back from doing good to them; and I will put my fear in their hearts, so that they may not turn from me. I will rejoice in doing good to them, and I will plant them in this land in faithfulness, with all my heart and all my soul.

Christian Ethics November 23, 2007

Hello world and readers, this is not a religious blog, this blog does not promote ”Worship” or ”prayer” to any ”God” or gods and goddesses for the simple reason that the poor writer of this blog himself is an agnostic after years of battering and battling with many religious, philosophical persuasions. Yet, my profile says I believe in Christian ethics. Actually, many people- from all walks and talks of life- make this claim without qualifying or clarifying.

In my Yahoo RSS feed I have a Bible (ESV, English Standard version) reading feed that I rarely take a look at, but it’s there. And today I signed into My Yahoo account and maybe after months I took a look at the Bible feed which became the genesis of this post. Those Bible verses from New Testament speak for themselves as far as the Christian ethics are concerned. For your feedback, reading pleasure and perusal I quote the following from my RSS feed taken from the Book of Jesus i.e. The New Testament. ;-)

James 2

The Sin of Partiality

2:1 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?

Faith Without Works Is Dead

14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

And this little piece from the Book of James, I believe, gives quite an original insight into human psyche and criminal and animal instincts

4:1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? 2 You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. 3 You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

Jerry Falwell finally lands in his own ”Heaven” May 15, 2007

erry Falwell finally lands in his own ”Heaven”.

b1f5.jpg

Picture: Jerry Falwell… Do you see that little box way up in the heavens? One day I wish to spend eternity up there and I want all of you to follow me.

Death will get ya in the end all ye poor and rich, black n white, sinners and saints. Yeah, one recurrent bunch of themes of my blogs is about religion, politics, ethics, freedom of thought and conscience. Anything significant that happens in these spheres gets my attention. Also, I am surprised to find how some folks have done great satirical comedy on religious dogmas. I recently watched Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life. The genre is classic Python absurdist comedy. At times it is hilarious and outrageous (young kids, male and female, singing chorus about condoms, God and sperm) but it conveys its central message in a much better way than Richard Dawkins etc.

Now, I just got news that Jerry Falwell has finally gone to his heaven, at least theoretically. I am not going to do a little biography of him. Can’t be bothered or even interested. He was one fundamentalist Christian preacher and proponent with all the hellfire and judgment talk. Indeed many Christians must hold him in angelic bright light but the likes of him make me puke. I find this breed- sort of Western Christian Taleban- very distasteful, corrupt, sleazy, selfish, malicious and evil people who prey upon the weak and resort to demagoguery of the cheapest sort to advance their holy careers.

What is most unpleasant about them is that they use their own personal agenda and promote their own careers by using ‘God’. Prominent part of this unpleasantness is their own reeking hypocrisy. Take Ted Haggard’s example. He was the head of the 30-million strong National Association of Evangelicals and strongly held on to fundamentalist Christianity, inerrancy of Bible and condemnation of homosexuality. But alas, in his own life he enjoyed gay sex, drugs and used to employ the services of male prostitutes. Hmmmm.. I cannot say, because of his personal choices, he was an evil man (he certainly did have some ideals and was a good leader in other ways) but his hypocrisy makes him a baddie. But how did Christians treat him? Did they show any FORGIVENESS ? Nope, they kicked him out of all leadership positions. He is too dirty for them now (though he is genuinely repentant) and cannot be made clean with either the water or the blood.. Haaaa.. Too Sad.

Another local example (Christchurch, New Zealand) was of one Graham Capill, the former leader of the New Zealand Christian Heritage party. He was a strong moral crusader and spat fire when talking about sexual morals and homosexuality (sure, the classic fag bashing is always the easiest thing to score plenty of moral points.) But alas, Capill had libido problems. But it was not that bad… he may still go to heaven because he did not take part in sodomy like that Ted American bastard mentioned in the above paragraph. He only made love to several young women, between the ages of 8 to 12. Interestingly, he maintained that at least one girl had sex with him with her own consent…. Hmmmmmm…

Anyhow, Coming back to Jerry Falwell.

jerry-falwell_wktv.jpg

Here are his holy remarks as published in Wikipedia:

Falwell was a controversial subject for his theological, political and social beliefs. After the September 11, 2001 attacks, Falwell said on the 700 Club, “I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say ‘you helped this happen.’” (a sentiment with which Pat Robertson concurred). [28] After heavy criticism, Falwell apologized. [29]. As for homosexuality, Falwell remarked, “AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals.” Falwell’s ghostwriter, Mel White, said Falwell remarked about gay protesters, “Thank God for these gay demonstrators. If I didn’t have them, I’d have to invent them. They give me all the publicity I need.”[30]

During the Civil Rights Movement Falwell was a supporter of racial segregation. He said this about Martin Luther King: “I do question the sincerity of people like the Reverend Martin Luther King…”[citation needed]

Falwell has also said, “Labor unions should study and read the Bible instead of asking for more money. When people get right with God, they are better workers.”[31] Regarding public schools, “I hope to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we don’t have public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them.” (America Can Be Saved!, Sword of the Lord Publishers, Murfreesboro, Tenn. 1979, p. 52-53.)[32]

I am so thankful to God that Jerry Falwell was airlifted by the angels to be carried to his own heaven. Good riddance.

adam-eve.jpg

Picture: Adam and Eve with their first baby.

Just moments ago I had couple of more little bad news: Things I were counting on crashed. Voot is going on? I deserve some great pieces of news and it better be soon!!! I will sue the angels. Or worse still, be indifferent to them! But I will not make it irreverent writing on Bible. I am not very fond of inviting new curses to already screwed up life. I’m just doing a journalistic job. I really wanted to draw some attention to the oddities that don’t generally get noticed by either Christians (who are too busy saying hallelujah and Amen) or Atheists (who are always trying to rave madly and prove Jesus never existed and later, in the same breath, state that his disciples were bad folks… kinda paradoxical …. how can Jesus not exist and his disciples can )

So… anyway… to the Bible. I mentioned at the end of my last blog that Bible ought to be the greatest book on the planet because it has most thoughts, laws, ethical codes, social justice codes, philosophies, ideas, ideals, imagery, human longings, sentiments, feelings, aspiration, noble thoughts and so much more that words cannot describe. I must say though the Old Testament was the masterpiece and New Testament borrows heavily from it in both language, theme, content and philosophy. There are such subtle minute connections- between OT and NT- that Bible scholars find them all the time. I lately found that the metaphor Jesus stated in support of non violence: about turning or offering the other cheek has been mentioned in the book of Lamentations in the Old Testament! (though in a different context)

Apart from that Bible has contributed greatly to the development of English Literature and scholarship. And also to the freedom of speech and expression. People were imprisoned, tortured, persecuted, executed for translating Latin Bible into English! Then we got King James Bible which was published in 1611. Not only it brought Bible in the hands of the masses but also it was a landmark for English Literature itself. Many great writers (including Shakespeare who was writing many of his great plays as he was reading KJV!) were inspired by King James Version. After that many scholars have been translating Original Hebrew Old Testament and Greek New Testament into English in various styles and genres. I think it is absolutely amazing. That’s all … about it I’m sure anyone can read HEAPS stuff on Bible history and all from hundreds of sources including Wikipedia . But here I’m just giving few personal random observations.

1.) Song of Solomon: I have watched/ read hundreds of Christian sermons for interest, study, fun, introspection…. BUT never have I heard anything on Song of Solomon which Christian pastors hush up as an alleged allegory representing the love of God and human beings. I don’t get it. I mean if you ‘re honest and call spade a spade we can clearly see it is the description of playful, sensual/ sexual love (Wikipedia cites: The book consists of a cycle of poems about erotic love…”) between two unmarried people (in some sections they are referred to as bride and bridegroom, but not always).. a guy and a girl. FORNICATION!!!?? I wanted to quote a couple of passages… even I kinda consider it crude to mention it here! I better let you scan the little book of Song of Solomon and pinpoint the naughty verses. Phew. Again, I chuckle at the thought of young school kids reading that stuff and getting ideas about playing with breasts and other foreplays!! Ahem!

2.) LOVE LOVE LOVE : Ok this one is in praise of Bible what a beautiful edifying definition of love: ( Here is a beautiful flash of 1 Corinthian 13 that includes following paragraph–1 Corinthians 13:4-7– on love):

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. (NRSV Bible)

I think it’s just so eloquent and beautiful.

3.) Gosh!!!! Violence. Bible got lots violence, bloodshed, wars from every side. Cutting of the heads was in vogue. But here is a weird one. One God’s soldier is ordered by God’s anointed king to go and kill some 200 or so philistines. So, how he proves that he did the job?? He brings back 200 or so foreskins of dead philistines as his war trophies for the king. Apparently, all Jews were circumcised, so every foreskin must belong to the other side. I mean when I read that it not only made me disgusted with its barbarity but also sounded darkly humorous. ”God’s anointed one!!! I brought ya some Foreskins… Whee!!!….”

There are commands from God to annihilate this and that tribe with specific mention that all men, women, children should be massacred: ”Now go and attack Amalek and utterly destroy all they have; do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.” ( 1 Samuel 15:3) Hmmmmm…. I think this is just so hard to swallow not only for Christians but any human being adhering to any religion or philosophy. I just stumbled upon hundreds of Christian pages passionately opposing any kind of abortion: read this amazing story with picture from Irish Independent Online about ”the baby holding the surgeons finger from within the womb during fetal operation.”. But reverting back to the 1 Samuel Bible verses: they specifically command killing of ”child and infant”. Baffling.

4.) Sin baby sin!!!! And our average fire spitting Southern Baptist pastor (and his brethren elsewhere on the planet) only focused on the Happy people (Gay) and left the rest of the crooks which surely would include the pastor and his family too: both immediate and the extended . *wink*. Here is the thundering list from Paul warning that most of us may well miss the train to heavenly spheres:

Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and thinks like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. ( NRSV Bible, Galatians 5: 19-21)

I mean really it’s such an exhaustive compilation of sins that comparing different translations is almost a lesson in English language. Different Bible versions render those original Greek words in different fashions. In case, some of you may be wondering what the hell is carousing???…. One Bible mentions it as ‘debauchery’ and other simply as ‘orgies’. And modern liberal people (or some Neo Pagans) might think that Bible writers in ancient times would have no knowledge of modern mystical, chic, radical, liberated sexuality. Sorry folks.. they got it in the damn list. LoL

You know… how some mystery, horror, gothic novels end in a creepy, foggy, surreal sort of way. I will end this blog with a paragraph from the last and most mysterious book of Supernatural Matrix in the bible and let you figure out whatever you think or imagine! :

The Woman and the Dragon

A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pangs, in the agony of giving birth. Then another portent appeared in heaven: a great and red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. Then the dragon stood before the woman who was about to bear a child, so that he might devour her child as soon as it was born. And she gave birth to a son, a male child, who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron. But her child was snatched away and taken to God and to his throne; and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, so that there she can be nourished for one thousand two hundred sixty days. (NRSV Bible, Revelation 7)

Who made the colors and the patterns of your wings dear butterfly!!?
Picture: Who made the colors and the patterns of your wings dear butterfly!!??

Ennui is other name for boredom… kinda long term, tedious, monotonous boredom. That’s what I’m facing right now. Weird. Many times life would either offer you chaos or flat boredom. At the moment, many doors in my life seem shut and there is dead silence though I’m knocking repeatedly. Wonder what is going on? I’m baffled and bored. Bored part is more worrying. For this reason, I didn’t even feel like posting any blog comments. I mean how can you offer your takes on life when you haven’t figured it out yourself?

But I guess, even chaos is preferable to eternal boredom. I forgot exact words of a great quote expressing the same sentiment.. but it went something like this, ”I would rather have the chaos of New York than the ennui of ’someplace’.” I think that’s really how I feel right now. Things gotta roll man for better or worse! If right now, someone sends me off to Afghanistan or Iraq as a soldier for any winning side I’d go at once. I mean where else you get to shoot and kill people and get medals for it? Sounds fun. *Sarcasm*

But anyhow, here is some fodder for thought. Some things got my attention. As the subject line mentions I will write about them in chronological order:

Mushy bestsellers: Ok, I’d never actually heard the name Nicholas Sparks before the movie Notebook. But then I once remember reading some Christian girl’s profile who mentioned she loved reading Nicholas Sparks novels. Now, I also gather a sweet Kevin Constner movie, Message in a bottle, was based on Nicholas Sparks novel. That movie, I loved actually. Sure, Sparks must have some talent. But anyhoo, this weekend I wanted to do something really weird. So I thought I would get me some Sparks. I got Notebook movie and A walk to remember novel from the library. The latter has become a ravingly popular book. Amazon.com ratings and number of people who rated the book is overwhelming, compared to what other books, even the great ones, get.

I was greatly disappointed. The notebook is OK, not great. I loved cinematography, stunning sunsets, full bright moon over glistening lake and lots digital beauty of white birds flying into the sunset. Acting, in my opinion was superb, especially the girl. (Both actors are Canadians by the way, who can pull off mush better than the Maple People???)

A walk to remember is such a dull, formulaic book and the story has the most hackneyed plot in all the history of love story/book writing. I can’t believe it became a bestseller!? The story: Boy (Landon) is cool, dandy, rich dad’s son… girl (Jamie) is rather poor but righteous pastor’s daughter… she is blond, sweet, angelic, super compassionate, heart of gold kinda girl. Boy doesn’t really like her but then he sees her soul and is drawn to her. Love blooms like flower buds in spring. Mush happens. Sweet moments. Kisses. Romance. Soon, we discover the girl has a sad secret… they will soon part. Heart breaks, tears. End of story. Okies… many people would like it. I really don’t want to sound sexist… but truth is many girls did like that book very much, which is fine. But when I think it was a raving bestseller and that Sparks made millions off it (including a movie)….. no matter how much I may loathe it…. I wanna do it too! LOL!

What was excruciatingly odd, Nicholas Sparks keeps on inserting Bible in their relationship. Girl always carries a bible with her,(even reads it in her school lunch breaks) which we later know was given to her by her dear deceased mother. In one super sweet moment, on a Christmas eve, poor Jamie (who cannot afford to buy Landon a gift) gives him her special leather bound bible. Jamie thinks it was the sweetest Christmas gift he ever got. I think both cry too… (they cry a lot anyway, if it was not mentioned, it must have been implied somehow) Throughout the last quarter of the book these two suffering lovers keep on reading and discussing Bible together.

Now, I will stop here and mention the rest of the contents in other blog (Part 2) as I don’t want to make it too long a reading at one time. But here is what to come. Bible Talk. In my opinion it has to be the greatest book of all time. It has thousands of stories, plots, imageries, ADULT THEMES, bizarre moments, surrealism, R- rated violence, dry humor, lots black/dark humor and yes….. sex… actually Song of Solomon, in my opinion gets very close to being a soft porn book hidden in Bible. Sue me, spank me, crucify me… I told ya the truth!

I mention this all…. because I always chuckle when I see on Christian TV some news story where they show little kids and their parents fighting with school authorities because they won’t let them carry or read bible in school. My question is: Is Bible even a G book like a G movie?…. I really don’t think so. I again chuckle when on Christian TV they give strict Christian ratings to Hollywood movies but at the same time encourage kids to read, on their own, a book with very ADULT Themes. The truth is if you may not really think Bible is an R book… then at least, in my opinion, it must accompany some educated, wise parental guidance before children can read it! More on the Wonders, beauty and creepiness (at least what seems at the face value) of Bible in the next blog. (Part 2)
